After Mahinda parted ways with the murderous duo who left for Embu, he drove back to Mweiga, fueled by the promise of land as a reward from Wang'ondu. By this time, news of Dan's death had spread rapidly, engulfing the town of Mweiga in sadness. Social media was abuzz with friends expressing their love, shock, and disappointment over the murder, demanding justice with the hashtag #JusticeForDunn. The motive behind the crime puzzled everyone.

The detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) meticulously examined the crime scene and noticed something peculiar. Despite the violent act, nothing was stolen from Dan's home. His phone, cash, and even his Volkswagen GT remained untouched. This raised suspicions about the motive behind the murder.

Meanwhile, Wang'ondu, playing the role of a grieving father, received messages of condolence from friends and family at his mansion. To him, it was just a fleeting moment. On January 5th, 2021, a candle vigil was held by Dan's friends and relatives to commemorate his short life as a young businessman. He would be forever remembered by them. On January 6th, 2021, Dan Mwangi Wang'ondu was laid to rest at his home in Wendiga Village. The burial was attended by hundreds of people who urged the authorities to swiftly apprehend the culprits.

Two weeks after the burial, Mahinda began pursuing his reward of acres of land. Wang'ondu had promised to compensate him, but he had another plan in mind. He sought to claim the life insurance policy that he had taken out on Dan. He frequently asked Mahinda to drive him to the Regional Commander's Office and the insurance company to present the required postmortem results for the payment process.

These visits to the Regional Commander's Office caught the attention of the detectives. They wondered how Wang'ondu could be so swift in processing the payment for his deceased son. When they delved into his file, they discovered that he had received a payment in 1995 for the death of another son, who had drowned mysteriously while on holiday at a dam on his farm. The pieces started to align, and the detectives delved deeper into Wang'ondu's life.

In the meantime, in Embu, Eddy and Raphael visited their accomplice, Mr. Geoffrey Warutumo, at his Muguka Baze. Warutumo wondered why they hadn't paid him a commission for their connection. The duo explained that they had given Mahinda Ksh 8,000 to give to him.

At that moment, Geoffrey Warutumo called Mahinda in Mweiga to request the Ksh 8,000. Mahinda sent him the money and instructed Geoffrey to tell Eddy and Raphael to turn off their phones. The situation was becoming dire, as the police were closing in on them. Sensing the danger, Mahinda relocated to Githurai 45, hoping to hide amidst the thousands of people there.

Unfortunately for Mahinda, the determined detectives were relentless in their pursuit. They noticed that Wang'ondu's driver was missing and began tracking him. On February 20th, the sleuths found Mahinda at his hiding spot in Githurai. After intense interrogation, Mahinda provided information that led the detectives to his acquaintances in the Matakani Area of Embu County. The four culprits were taken to Nyeri and presented to court. During further questioning in the Nyeri cells, they revealed that it was all Wang'ondu's plan. On February 24th, 2021, Wang'ondu was arrested.

The news of Wang'ondu's arrest infuriated the people of Mweiga, who held demonstrations the next day, demanding justice for Dan and expressing their frustration that the police had arrested Wang'ondu instead of allowing them to take matters into their own hands. The five suspects were arraigned in court and remanded at King'ong'o Prison. However, since they were considered innocent until proven guilty, they were released on a Ksh 1 million bond on April 28th, awaiting their first court appearance scheduled for May 10th.

During this period, Wang'ondu was admitted Outspanning Hospital due to COVID-19 complications. Unfortunately, he passed away on May 7th, three days before his scheduled trial for his son's murder. He was 74 years old at the time of his death.

The news of Wang'ondu's death brought satisfaction to many, who cursed him for orchestrating his son's murder and wished him eternal shame instead of rest in peace. However, his burial was surrounded by controversy. Only his family was allowed to enter the gate, and nobody saw the body or heard a eulogy. These circumstances fueled rumors that the billionaire was still alive, further adding to the speculation.
