After Stephen Wangondu had made the chilling call to his driver, Mahinda, instructing him to assemble a team to execute his own son, a dark plan began to take shape. Mahinda, initially hesitant, was convinced by Wangondu's cunning proposal. Wangondu devised a plan for Mahinda to feign the need for disciplinary action against unruly employees at his stone-crushing plant in Mweiga. This ruse would serve to recruit individuals who could be persuaded to take part in the sinister plot. Intrigued by the prospect of eliminating his biggest rival in managing Wangondu's businesses, Mahinda eagerly agreed, enticed further by the promise of vast land as a reward.

On December 29, 2020, Mahinda reached out to his friend, Geoffrey Warutumo, the owner of a Miraa Shop in Embu Town, under the pretense of seeking casual laborers. The following day, Mahinda traveled to Embu after receiving a sum of Ksh 20,000 from Wangondu. This was to put pressure on Geoffrey, who in turn contacted his frequent customer, Eddy Ngari, to inquire about job opportunities. Shortly after, Eddy arrived at the Muguka Baze, meeting Mahinda and expressing his willingness to participate. As if by fate, Eddy recommended his friend, Raphael Wachira, to complete the team.

Mahinda revealed the true nature of the plan to Eddy and Raphael, offering a meager payment of Ksh 100,000 while intending to keep Ksh 60,000 as his commission. The allure of the sum proved too enticing for the desperate duo, clouding their judgment as they accepted the murderous mission. The trio boarded a matatu from Embu to Nyeri, a journey of 78 kilometers, and upon arrival, enjoyed a satisfying meal at a popular restaurant in town, finalizing their sinister strategy—disciplining Dan once and for all.

Following their lunch, the trio proceeded to Mweiga town via matatu before hiring a bodaboda to take them to Dan Mwangi's home. Eddy and Raphael needed to familiarize themselves with the location. They then returned to Mweiga, where Mahinda pointed out Dan, who was blissfully celebrating the last day of the year. Mahinda provided them with gloves and a metal rod for the job, along with Ksh 500 each to spend as they waited for the opportune moment to ambush Dan. They parted ways, and Mahinda headed to Wangondu's stone-crushing plant to meet with his boss, updating him on the progress of the plan, which brought a sinister smile to the tycoon's face. Mahinda then drove Wangondu home, leaving himself with the getaway vehicle.

Meanwhile, Dan, oblivious to the impending danger, reveled in his usual haunts, from Zero 19 in Nyeri town to Club Tent in his hometown of Mweiga. He lived life to the fullest, like any other joy-seeking Kenyan. Unbeknownst to him, Eddy and Raphael were diligently tracking his movements. After momentarily losing him, they resorted to waiting for him at his gate, arriving on a bodaboda and hiding in the nearby bushes, ready to pounce when the time was right.

As dawn approached and the festivities began to wind down, a weary Dan made his way home, blissfully unaware that it would be his final journey on this earthly plane. He stepped out of his car to open the gate, and that was when the two assailants ambushed him. Striking him relentlessly with the metal rod and stabbing him repeatedly, they left him lying in a pool of blood. In that moment, the vibrant spirit of Dan Mwangi departed this world on the dawn of January 1, 2021. At precisely 5:30 a.m., the two murderers called Mahinda, demanding payment for a job well done. Mahinda hastily met them in Mweiga town, handing over the agreed sum, and then drove them to a safe hiding spot in Kamatongu Hill as he processed their payment.

With the task complete, Mahinda returned to Wangondu's residence, where the pleased tycoon rewarded him with Ksh 160,000. Mahinda skillfully played his part, ensuring no suspicion would fall upon him. He then drove back to Kamatongu, delivering the promised Ksh 100,000 to Eddy and Raphael, who gleefully accepted their reward. Eddy used the money to build a modest two-roomed house, while Raphael indulged in expensive purchases such as a subwoofer and drinks at his local watering hole.
